OONI Koda: outdoor gas pizza oven test In January of this year.
Ooni introduced its new outdoor portable gas pizza oven, the Ooni Koda. I really liked the Uuni 3, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to test this new model. After all, what could be better than a pizza oven? Two pizza ovens of course!
The Ooni Koda is an outdoor gas pizza oven that can reach temperatures of up to 500º in 15 minutes and bake a Neapolitan pizza in just 60 seconds.
Koda is Ooni’s first gas pizza oven. Using gas allows you to focus on preparing your pizza.
The control / ignition button is located on the back of the oven with the regulator and the hose of the propane gas tank.
There are 3 folding legs below the oven. The feet are almost twice as long as those of the Ooni 3, which facilitates access to the oven during cooking.
Unlike the Ooni 3, the Koda does not have a chimney. Instead, there are thermal vents located at the bottom rear of the oven, which adds to its overall compact design.
The oven weighs a little over 9 kilos and its compact and portable design makes it perfect for any outdoor space.
COOKING PIZZAS WITH OONI KODA
Koda is designed to be used right out of the box. All you have to do is unfold the legs, insert the stone and connect it to your gas supply. There’s nothing easier than that.
Starting the oven is easy using the quick start button. All you have to do is turn on your propane tank and turn the knob to turn on the oven. The button also allows you to better control the internal temperature of the oven.
The oven only takes 10 to 15 minutes to reach its temperature, thanks to the insulated steel shell and the baking sheet in refractory stone. According to Ooni, the ideal temperature for baking a pizza is around 400º. I used an infrared thermometer and started baking my pizza when the center of the baking sheet reached this temperature.
I also turned the control knob down to prevent the oven from getting too hot. In my experience with the Ooni 3, I discovered that if the oven overheated, it would burn the pizza toppings.
When it comes to preparing the actual pizza, I highly recommend using Ooni’s pizza dough recipe. It’s an easy recipe whose key ingredient is 00 flour. 00 is very fine and rich in protein, which helps it become stretchy and easy to work with. It also produces a delicious tasting crust.
In addition you can freeze all the remaining dumplings for the next time.
For me, stretching the dough is the hardest part of making pizza. But like anything else, practice allows me to improve myself every time.
Once the dough is stretched and the pizza is ready to be baked. Since Koda cooks quickly, the key is to rotate your pizza every 20 seconds or so. This allows it to cook evenly and get that nice golden crust.
My first pizza of the season was a huge success. It was fantastic ! The crust was crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. I said that about the Ooni 3, and it’s true for Koda. The pizza is as good as any I have eaten in a restaurant. Making your own pizza from start to finish at home is really rewarding. And don’t forget that you can also use Koda to cook vegetables, fish and meat very quick.
Like Ooni 3, Ooni Koda is an exceptional pizza oven. It has a great design, it is portable, super easy to use and most importantly, it allows you to make Neapolitan pizzas like in a restaurant. There is absolutely no better way to make homemade pizza than with Ooni Koda. So if you’re a pizza lover or just a fan of outdoor cooking, do yourself a favor and invest!
